Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the morning of 22nd July 1916 the battalion were in the lines near Bazentin-le-Petit and were ordered to attack and capture the enemy "switch line" cutting through the north of High Wood and running south of Marticpuich. The attack, undertaken with the 10th Bn Royal Warwickshire and 7th Bn South Lancashire Regiment, failed with 200 casualties including Frank and the Commanding Officer who was shot in the neck. At 4am on the 23rd the Battalion retired to the original starting point.
