Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Thomas was killed on 11 June 1918 in a mid-air collision over Thetford when his Armstrong Whitworth aircraft collided with an R.E.8 being flown by Lt. William Bowick and 2nd Lt. Harry Prince. All three pilots were killed.
A newspaper article in Coventry Graphic on Friday 21 June 1918 states: The Late 2nd-Lieut T.E. SMITH At Wyken Churchyard on Saturday, the funeral took plavce of Second-Lieut. T.E. Smith, R.A.F who met with a fatal accident while flying. He was a popular favourite in the district and his untimely end occassioned widespread regret. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. S.C. Alton and the bearers Messrs. W Smith, H. Smith, D. Smith, A. Smith, F. Smith and J. Higginbottom (uncles of the deceased) and the chief mourners were: Mr & Mrs G. Smith (parents), George, Lizzie, Irene (sisters), Miss B. Morrall, Worcester; Mrs E. Walton of Oundle (aunt), Mr C. Ward (cousin), Mrs J. Higginbottom, Mr and Mrs H. Higginbottom, Mr. Eli Smith and Techinical Sergt-Major V.C. Higginbottom (uncles and aunts). A magnificent lot of flowers were sent by relatives and friends. The deceased officer was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs. G. Smith "The Mount", Walsgrave-on-Sowe and a grandson of the late Mr. Thomas Higginbottom, Indian Mutiny veteran. |
