Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
At the end of the first day of the German Spring Offensive - 21st March 1918 - the 5th Hussars were forced to dismount into the lines near Bihecourt. At 10am the following day were ordered to fall back to the Green Line at Bernes and during the withdrawal A Squadron was very nearly surrounded but escaped under heavy shellfire. Once the battalion reached Bernes they marched to Mons-en-Chausee where they met with their horses and then rode to Athies. From there they took up a position at Prusle Cross Roads to cover the retreating infantry crossing the Somme at St. Christ and they remained there overnight. It is thought that Cyril was killed during the shelling of A Squadron. ![]() |
