Circumstances of Death

Albert is listed as being killed in action on 1 May 1918. The 2nd Battalion war diary entry dated May 1/2 is transribed below.

In the lines near Boisleux-au-Mont Station 1/2 May 1918: The Regiment was relieved by the 24th Bn Royal Fusiliers and withdrew to the position of the Reserve Battn as previously occupied.

The relief was effected without incident save that soon after 9pm as the party of Guides, Capt C.T. Chevalier and about 18 other ranks were leaving Regimental HQ’s to proceed to the point of meeting the relieving Bttn (a brigde of the Cojeul River) near Boisleus-au-Mont Station, they came under a very unpleasant burst of shelling, the first shell of which killed 3 and wounded 7 of the guides. This caused some confusion but luckily not much delay as the relieving Battn had occupied this line before and in spite of the extreme darkness of the night was able to find its was with a less number of guides, into its positions.

For his very fine work in tending the wounded 19156 Pte Mount, a Regt Scout, and one of the HQ’s guides was subsequently awarded the Military Medal.
