John is listed as being killed in action on 2 Jan 1915. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the 1st and 2nd Jan 1915 are transcribed below. B Lines - January 1st: A quiet day in the trenches. The Germans shelled Battalion Headquarters for about 2 hours in the morning and afternoon, no damage done, shells for the most part falling short. [Killed Pte George William Whiteing] B Lines - January 2nd: Battalion Headquarters again shelled by Germans, this has now become a daily practise. A telephone and heavy cable issued to B Lines by Brigade Signal Section which was put up in the evening between HQ's and O.C. C Company. Casualties [over two days] 1 killed and 2 wounded.
