Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Although the CWGC list Arthur's date of death as 17th July 1916 it is highly likely that the was killed on the 14th because the Battalion were not engaged in fighting on the 17th and a letter sent to his wife by a Sgt Godfrey states that he was killed on the 14th. The CWGC lists the latest date that a man was killed when there is a doubt as to the exact date. The Battle of Bazentine took place between the 14th and 17th July 1916.

On the 14th July the battalion attacked enemy lines on Bazentine Ridge from their position in Mametz Wood. However they suffered very heavy lossed due to artillery and machine gun fire while they were crossing No Mans Land between the Allied and German trench lines. By the end of the battle most of the objectives were reached and consolidated before the battalion were relieved on the 17th July.
