Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Ernest is listed as killed in action on 14th May 1917. The 87th Company war diary entries for the period 13th to 16th are transcribed below and it appeards that Ernest's machine gun was hit by shell fire killing him and 2 others.

Monchy Sector - 13.5.1917: Company marched from Duisan to the trenches (Monchy sector) relieving 8th, 9th and 76th M.G. Company’s.

1 officer evacuated sick to UK (struck off strength)

Monchy Sector - 14.5.1917: 1 Machine Gun blown up by shell fire – 3 O.R. killed & 1 O.R wounded.

Monchy Sector - 15.5.1917: No diary entry made
