Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Between 9th and 16th August 1916 the battalion was based in the area of La Manse and had been holding the support line in the area between Fontaine Houck on the right and Ermitage on the left. There was no engagement with the enemy except that on the14th the area being held by the battalion was heavily gas shelled causing 66 casualties. It is believed that this is what led to Arthur's death at the 62nd Casualty Clearing Station.
