Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

It is not known on what day William was wounded as the diary is not specific but the battalion were on the front lines at Ribecourt when the German Spring Offensive began on March 21st and they had to fight a rearguard action by falling back to Neuville on the 21st, Beaulencourt on the 22nd, Ytres on the 23rd, High Wood via Flers on the 24th, Thiepval on the 25th and finally Engelbelner on the 26th when the retirement stopped. William died of his wounds at one of the two Stationary Hospitals at Doullens.
