Charles is listed as being killed in action on 26 Apr 1915, the war diary entry for the 25th and 26th is transcibed in full below, as a there was an attack by the 1st Battalion that took place overnight on the 25th. 25 April - Vielje: Left Ypres at 12mn for Vielje where orders were received for the attack. The Brigade attacked at 4.30am. We attackded Wood on the left of the line with the 7th Arg & Suth Highladers in support, the Seaforth Highlanders, Royal Irish and Royal Dublin Fusiliers attacked attacked on our right on St. Julien. Owing to the German trenches being insufficiently shelled & supports unable to come up the line retired at 7am to trenches near the farm and consoliated our position. Our casualties were very heavy, 17 Officers and 500 other ranks killed, wounded or missing. 26 April - Vielje: "Heavy gunfire all day. About 2.30pm the Northumberland Division attacked St. Julien without success. We opened supporting fire from our own trenches. The Lahore Division attacked on our left but gained very little ground being stopped by gas". Casualty figures are not given for this day. |
