Sidney is listed as being killed in action on Christmas Day 1914 in the front lines near Le Touret. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 24th to 26th December 1914 are transcribed below and indicate that Sidney was killed by a sniper. E of Le Touret - 24 Dec 1914: – Trenches improved, another communication trench was started, Germans threw a few bombs and snipers caused a few casualties. E of Le Touret - 25 Dec 1914: Very cold and freezing hard, snipers caused a few casualties, otherwise quiet. Defence arranged, 2 Coys in trenches, 1 Coy in support and 1 Coy in billets. Relief taking place nightly. E of Le Touret - 26 Dec 1914: Quiet on front. Col Pereira ricked his back and had to go to the Field Ambulance for a few days. Major P.A. MacGregor commanded Battalion |
