Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The day before Alfred is recorded as being killed the battalion were engaged in two failed attempts to capture Pozieres after two bombardments failed to sufficiently deal with enemy barbed wire and machine gun post which caused great casualties and brought the attacks to a halt. The day that Alfred is recorded as being killed the battalion were relieved in their positions by the 11th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. No mention is made of casualties however relief operations were dangerous and men were often killed and wounded during them.| Personal & Family History |
