Albert is listed as being killed in action (Register of Effects) or dying of wounds (Pension Card & Soldiers Who Died in Great War) on 27 Auig 1916. The Warwickshire Roll of Honour states that he died of wounds at the 21st Casualty Clearing Station which at that time was in Corbie and used La Neuville British Cemetery to bury its fallen soldiers. War Diary 26th AugustHappy Valley – 26/8/1916: Battalion in tents. C.O, Adj and OC Coys left Camp at 2am. Proceeded via Maricourt to Hardicourt to reconnoitre route and line to be taken over. Battn relieved 20th Lancashire Fusiliers in front line system between Angle Wood and Falfemont Farm (Nof of Maurepas). Position only captured two nights previously & not yet properly established. A, B & C Coys in front line and D Coy in Reserve at Hardecourt. Relief difficult owing to bad lines of communication. Complete on 27th at 2.30am. War Diary 27th AugN of Maurepas – 27/8/1916: Not much time to dig before dawn. Necessary to be keep still by day. Received warning orders for a day attack on 29th in conjunction with the French who are on our immediate right. The Battn forms extreme right of British line. As soon as dark commenced digging a new forward line 200x [yards] in front of present front line. Also commenced digging to the right for 50x to link up with the French. In spite of shellfire and the difficulties of organizing the construction of a new line a trench was completed before dawn on a 400 yard front averaging 4 feet deep. Casualties: Lieut Davenport and 2nd Lt Travis wounded and 1 OR killed and 1 OR wounded. END |
