Circumstances of Death

Albert is listed as dying of wounds on 20 May 1917 and he was buried at Bucquoy Road, Cemetery in Ficheux which was home to the VII Corps Main Dressing Station and, probably, the 20th and 43rd Casualty Clearing Stations. The 79th Company war diary does not give any information in regards to casualties or actions and the entries for the whole of May 1917 are transcribed below and they indicated that Albert was wounded and died on the 19th.

Heninel – 16th May:  Work on trench between left sector sap completed to 3’ 6” & wired. Very wet night.

Heninel – 17th May: Whole of new line completed to 3’ 6” deep and wired low wire. Work on bomb block in left sap and Dug Outs continued. 1 RE wounded by shell

Heninel – 18th May: Three forwards Saps widened and deepened – work on bomb blocks for left and right Saps and Dug Outs cont.

Heninel – 19th May: Further work in Saps bomb blocks and dug outs. 1 RE killed, 1 died of wounds, 4 wounded by shell.

Heninel – 20th May: 3 sections standing by for Special Work. 4th section continued on Dug Outs. 1 RE wounded.

Heninel – 21st May: Relieved by and took over work of 92nd Field Company RE. Wiring and digging on support line at night.
