Original Burial Information

Harold was originally buried as map reference 44A.P.22.b.1.9 and his remains were exhumed and moved to Orchard Dump in April 1920. More here

Circumstances of Death

Harold is listed as being killed in action on 15 Oct 1918. The 5th Battalion Report of Operations was found in the war diary and the entries for the 12th, 13th & 14th Oct are transcribed below.

Oct 12th - Report on Operations: A & C companies continued the advanvce - clearing Hesin Lietard and working forward in face of oppostion to line of road running S.E. from P.13.d.5.0

Oct 13th - Report on Operations: In spite of strong opposition Dourges was cleared of the enemy and a line established on line of road in P.15.a & c. Enemy found to be holding line of canal in great force.

Oct 14th - Report on Operations: Patrols reported enemy still holding E bank of Canal and all bridges blown up. D & B Companies relieved A & C Companies in front line. Shell fire very heavy on night of 14/15th.

Oct 15th - Report on Operations: Further advance still impossible but great dimunation of shell fire. Transport and QM stores moved to Billy-Montigny. 3 O.R. killed & 8 OR wounded.

Oct 16th - Report on Operations: At 6am patrols reported E bank of Canal clear and B Coy freed a passage over the Pont du Sault. Enemy still found to be holding wood in P.16.a in strength and line taken up on E Bank of Canal. During the night of 16/17th a pontoon bridge was erected 100 yards S of Pont du Sault
