Circumstances of Death

Leonard is listed as being killed in action on 18th January 1917 and local reports state that he was killed by a sniper. He appears to be the only man killed on that day. The 9th Battalion war diary for the period 17th to 19th is transcribed below. In the Field [near Kut] – Mesopotamia – January 17th 1917: Casualties 2/Lt I Eastabrook sick. 1 BO. Working parties as usual assisted in digging new fire and forming up trench 100 yards N of our present front line trench. Also similar trench S of, and parallel to present front line approximately along original piquet line. In the Field [near Kut] – Mesopotamia – 18th January 1917: Casualties B.O.R. one killed one wounded one sick. Digging parties as last night. In the Field [near Kut] – Mesopotamia – 19th January 1917: Casualties B.O.R. one wounded two sick. Conference of C.O’s at Brigade HQ to discuss future operations. Situation unchanged. |
