Herbert is listed as being killed in action on 18th August 1916. The 1st/6th Battalion war diary entries for the period 17th to 19th August 1916 are transcribed below. Ovillers – 17 Aug 1916: In trenches, Counter attack by Hun on right but stopped by the artillery. Casualties: 2/Lt B.W. Purchase wounded; 2/Lt A.P. Haggo slightly wounded but remained at duty. O.R. 3 killed and 11 wounded. Ovillers – 18 Aug 1916: In trenches. Took part in attack with 1/5th R War R & 4th Berks R co-operated on right. Held up for short time on right by German strong point but soon succeeded in taking whole objectives capturing 6 officers and 245 OR’s including large numbers of N.C.O’s. Casualties: Capt. R.C. Lowe; Lt. Crockett; 2/Lt’s Pearson, Skillington, Lomax, & Phaggo killed. Capt. B Hargreave & 2/Lt’s Seddon & Shelton wounded. OR’s 23 killed, 90 wounded and 10 missing. Ovillers – 19 Aug 1916: In trenches. Consolidating captured territory. Casualties: OR 3 killed, 10 wounded & 3 missing. Moved slightly to left at night. |
