  • 24 Dec 1901 - Appointed 2nd Lt in 2nd Dragoon Guards from being a Lieutenant in the Imperial Yeomany (Gazette)
  • 25 Dec 1902 - Promoted to Lieutenant in 2nd Dragoon Guards (Gazette)

Circumstances of Death

Edward is listed as being killed in action on 26th April 1915 whilst in temporary command of the Battalion. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 25th to 27th April 1915 are transcribed below.

Attack on St. Julien – 25 Apr 1915: Battalion deployed west of Wieltje – St. Julien moved at 4am.

7pm. Lt. Col Loveband CMG being wounded handed over command to Captain Bankes.

Battalion dug in on a line a ¼ mile from and facing St. Julien. Heavy casualties. Quiet night.

St. Julien - 26 Apr 1915: Trenches facing St. Julien. Quiet morning up to 11am. Northumbrian Infantry Brigade attacked through our trenches. Captain Barnes was killed. Captain Basil MacLear assumed command. Heavy shelling throughout the day and intermittent. Occasional shelling throughout the night.

St. Julien - 27 Apr 1915: Quiet day, no sniping, shelling commenced at 8pm and continued intermittently throughout the night.
