Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being accidentally drowned in Syria on 27th June 1919. A user on the Great War forum posted that he was subsequently "buried 150 yards south west of Homs Railway Station, Syria", however his grave must have been lost and he is now remembered on the Jerusalem Memorial. We don't have any more details about how he drowned. George had arrived in Egypt six weeks earlier on the 8th May 1919 having been at the R.A.V.C depot from 17 Nov 1917 (on returning from France) to 26th Apr 1919. In 1919 the 4th Cavalry Division, to which he was attached, were involved in Occupation Duties, following the Armistice of Mudros on 30 October 1918, the division remained as part of the occupation forces in Syria and Palestine. By early 1919, many units were engaged in policing duties, including controlling unrest during the Egyptian Revolution of 1919, with most British war-time units in the division leaving by May 1919. |
