Fred is listed as being killed in action on 31st December 1917. The brief 23rd Battalion war diary entries for the period 30th December to 1st January 1918 are transcribed below but give no clues as to the cause of Fred's death.

Gropi Camp – 30 Dec 1917: Relieved the 22nd R Fus in the left Canal Sector of the Hindenburg Line, holding positions as follows:
