Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The Warwickshire Roll of Honour book states that William was taken prisoner on 23 March 1917, however that is not supported by the Battalion war diary which shows them to be in the Meteren area involved in training, resting and bathing for some days. It is more likely to have been on 23 March 1918, the third day of the massive counterattack from the German Spring Offensive during which the battalion war diary was lost as Allied troops retreated.Williams Red Cross Records (click here to view them) 23 Mar 1917 show that he was held at Maristenkloster, Peruwelz PoW camp and his Register of Effects records his place of death as the Maristen Kloster Military Hospital.
