Original Burial

Geoffrey's Commonwealth Grave registration documents show that he was originally buried at map reference 51B.B.6.d.3.1, SE of Arleux-en-Gohelle before his remains were moved to their current location in Orchard Dump Cemetery on or about 12 January 1921. He is the only man from his Regiment buried at that place. The casualy list contained with the 7th Battalion war diary confirms his being killed on the 4th October 1918 although it is possible he was killed overnight 3rd/4th. Circumstances of Death

Geoffrey is listed as being killed in action on 4th October 1918. The 7th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

SSE of Arleux-en-Gohelle - 4 Oct 1918: Map Ref B.12.a.35.50. Shelling of captured positions [on the 3rd] was frequent, particularly on left Company front line & in vicinity of Battalion HQ. Patrols were sent out to get into touch with 2nd Bn Sherwood Forester on right and with 12th Bn Kings on the left.

The CO met the Brigadier in Tummy Alley trench. Situation & dispositions were discussed. Later in the day liaison was established with 2nd Bn Sherwood Forester & with 12th Kings.

Patrols reported Oppy Wood and Fresnoy Wood clear of the enemy. During the afternoon a portion of Fresnoy trench captured by D Coy was handed over to 2nd Sherwoods. A Coy which had reinforced D Coy under Lt Parkes relieved D Coy which withdrew to support.

Very effective support, in form Counter Battery work & Crash bombardments was given by the 8th Division artillery. Valuable assistance was also given by MGC & 61st T.M. Battery.

Considerable hostile shelling was experienced during the night

3 prisoners were captured during the day.
