Circumstances of Death

Walter died of wounds, a compound fracture of the base of the skull, on the 20th April 1917 at the No 3 Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers. Walter's service record shows that he was wounded on the 18th April 1917 when the railway station at Velu was blown up by a German mine. The 2nd Battalion war diary entry for the 18th April is transcribed below.

Fremincourt - 18 Apr 1917: Line completed to Fremincourt.

Fremincourt - "B Co. Camp established at I 26 d 7.7. Company had no labor today but laid 2000 feet of steel. Shortage of tools and steel.

Baupume - Lieuts. H.C. Anderson, G.F. Ritchie and G.C. Thomas, and 120 O.R. of "A" Co. lifting, ballasting and tracklaying.

Baupume - "C" Co. employed as yesterday in Bapume Yard and line immediately east of it. Company's Groceries Canteen similar to that at Battalion H.Q. and the other Company's camps of the unit established by Capt. J.H. Craig.

Lebucquiere - 90 O.R. of "D" Co., 22 preparing railway formation; 60 preparing and setting up timber for bridge and 10 surveying.

Velu Station blown up by a mine killing 10 and injuring 26 O.R. Australians and injuring No 778085 Sapper Harris, W. and No. 776071 Sapper Westbeare, W.A., of "D" Co.
