Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 26 Sep 1916. The 16th Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below.

Morval - Sept 26th 1916:

  • 6.30am: I moved my headquarters to T.11.a.7.1
  • 11am: I reported to Bde that I had got 2 Coys in the line from T.11.b.2.8 to T.11.b.4.54 and two Coys from T.11.b.9.2 to T.12.d.2.8 and had asked 1st Cheshire for 1 Coy to occupy trench from T.11.a.7.5 to T.11.a.7.2
  • 1.20pm: I asked artillery to shell German trench T.11.d.8.5 to T.12.c.2.2
  • 2.40pm: Message from Leicester Regiment that they were relieving us
  • 4.20pm: I asked artillery to shell section of trench T.11.d.8.4 to T.12.d.2.2 held by Germans
  • 4.35pm: Message from OC D Coy that he was not in touch with Battn on his left
  • 4.35pm: I ordered OC D Coy to make a defensive flank from T.11.b.1.8 thirty yards along the sunken road towards Morval Mill, also to get in touch with battn on left.
  • 5.30pm: Guides sent to the 1st Cheshires to bring up Leicester Regt
  • 7.30pm: Message from OC B Coy to say that a strong German patrol had approached their lines but had been driven off with rifle & machine gun fire
  • 12 midnight: Relief complete. Battn moved to Oxford Copse arriving at 4.30am [27 Sep 1916]
