Circumstances of Death

John died of wounds on 4th October 1915 at the 7th (West Riding) Casualty Clearing Station in Lillers. His wounds were caused by a shell bursting in his dugout in the line at La Beuvriere. The 15th Signal Company war diary entries for the period 3rd to 6th October are transcribed below and mention John on 3 occassions.

Le Beuvriere - 3.10.1915: Unit moved to Chateau le Beuvriere. A shell burst in a dug in which were men attached to Artillery HQ. Driver C. Evans killed, Sapper H.L. Williams & Driver R. Kerr seriously wounded. Corporal J Mound and Driver Wilkinson wounded.

Le Beuvriere - 4.10.1915: Sapper H.L. Williams & Driver R. Kerr died of wounds. Corporal J Mound reported seriously wounded. Corp. Walsh reverted at his own request to Sapper. Corp Knights & Sapper Walsh proceeded to 45th Brigade Signals.

Le Beuvriere - 5.10.1915: Nothing special to report.

Le Beuvriere - 6.10.1915: L/Corporal J Mound died of wounds. Leave commenced on the Division.
