Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The operation during which Fred was killed started at 3.20am on 23 Oct 1918 when the 2nd Highland and 24th Royal Fusiliers assaulted, and captured, the days first objective which was the line of a road that ran NE of Vertain to a crossroads. By 7.30am the 2nd battalion (including Fred) had captured the 2nd objective including the village of Escarmain NE of Vertain. The battalion was now very close to the enemy held village of Capelle which indeed was captured soon after. The battalion reached the south side of the Eciallon River and came under enemy fire from higher ground on the north side of the river. At this point the battalion dug in and consolidated their gains in preparation for the following day. Casualty figures are not given but are described as relatively light.| Personal & Family History |
