Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 15th May 1918. The Warwickshire Roll of Honour book states that he was killed "whilst transported pidgeons to the firing line". The 112th Infantry Brigade war diary entries for the period 14th to 16th May are transcribed below.

E.23.c.8.4 - 14 May 1918: Some hostile shelling and much E A activity in afternoon. Left Battalions report the enemy “Circus”, formerly commanded by Capt. Frechen von Richtofen, patrolling the Brigade front.

Issue of 112th Brigade Defence scheme. Fine day.

E.23.c.8.4 - 15 May 1918: Issue of 112th Brigade Order No 196 re the relief of 112th Brigade by the 185th Infantry Brigade of the 62nd Division on the night of the 17/18 day & the subsequent move of the 112th Infantry Brigade to the Louvencourt area.

E.23.c.8.4 - 16 May 1918: Fine day. No event of importance to record
