Circumstances of Death

Ernest is listed as dying of wounds received in action at the 48th Casualty Clearing Station (CCS) in Brie, France on 4th October 1918. The 1st/4th Battalion war diary entries for the period 28th September to 4th October are transcribed below and  from them it is likely that Edwin was wounded on either the 29th September or 3rd October 1918. The Warwickshire Roll of Honour reports that Edwin died through loss of blood whilst undergoing an operation which makes us lean towards the 3rd as the date he was likely wounded. It is highly unlikely that he would have wounded prior to those days as he was still at a CCS - for more on Medical Evacuation and Treatment click here. The Warwickshire Roll of Honour reports that Edwin died through loss of blood whilst undergoing an operation.
