The 1st/7th Battalion war diary for the period to 6th to 8th June are transcribed below and indicate that William was actually killed on the 6th. Ploegsteert Wood - 6 Jun 1915: Usual working parties. Detail of new distribution of troops explained at Brigade Conference. One man killed on working party. Capt Payton to 4th Rifle Bde for instruction in Adjutants duties. Ploegsteert Wood - 7 Jun 1915: New distributions of troops carried out. Bn ? up. 1 Coy to Ash House as local reserve to Right battalion of Bde Section, 1 Coy Laplus Doidce as local reserve to Left battalion of Bde Section. HQ and 2 Coys to bivouacs in Ploegsteert Wood. Various details re day & night positions of Bn received and carried out. Working parties as usual. Ploegsteert Wood – 8 Jun 1915: Working parties as usual. A very hot day, followed by thunderstorm at night. |
