Circumstances of Death

Harry is listed as dying of wounds on 14th July 1915. He was buried at La Clytte Cemetery which was not attached to any medical facilities and therefore we assume that he died shortly after being wounded. The 3rd Battalion war diary entries for the period 12th to 15th July are transcribed below.

Brasserie Farm - 12 Jul 1915: Bn moved from bivouacs to front line of trenches in continuation to the right of trenches held the previous occupation viz O2, O1, N5, N6, N10, N12, S7. This line was held by three Coys, No 4 Coy & Capt Hill remained in the Brasserie.

Brasserie Farm - 13 Jul 1915: Major Roberts had an attack of fever. Major Baker assumed command. Situation in trenches normal.

1pm: Enemy shelled Bn HQ Dugouts at Brasserie Farm. 7 casualties including Sgt Lawrence, signaling Sergeant. HQ moved to Vierstraaat Switch. Officers of Scots Fusiliers, 9th Brigade, inspected fire trenches during the afternoon.

Brasserie Farm - 14 Jul 1915: Brasserie dugouts completed by Capt Hill and Bn HQ moved into them. The Bn was relieved by the Scots Fusiliers night of 14/15. Very quiet night. Scots Fusiliers lost their guides & relief was not completed until 4.30am. The Bn finally arrived in Billets NW of Kemmel Hill at 7am.

NW of Kemmel Hill – 15 Jul 1915: Resting. R.S.M. Dockrill went sick. Total casualties [during tour in trenches] 9 wounded and 1 died of wounds.
