James is listed as being killed in action on 26 Sep 1914. The 3rd Battalion war diary entries for the period 25th to 27th Sept are transcribed below. In Trenches 2 Miles N of Soupir 25.9.14 – 4.15am: Attack on German trenches by C Company and part of D Company under Major A.A. Boden. Major A.D. Boden and Lieut M.N. McKenzie (K.R. Rifles) missing. Captain P. A. Kennedy wounded. 2 Riflemen killed, 1 Rifleman died of wounds. 26 NCO’s & men wounded, 23 NCO’s & men missing. 25/26.9.14 - Night: Battalion Supported by S. Stafford Regt. 26.9.14 – Early: ½ Battalion S Staffs Reg go away. 4 Rifleman killed, Capt S.A. Sherston slightly wounded. 17 NCO’s and men wounded. 26/27.9.14 - Night: Coldstream Guards on right relieved by Royal Berks Regt. |
