Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion joined other Guards Regiments near the Broenbeek at Map reference 20.V.16.C.9.2 (see map below) which was the starting point for an attack to capture three unnamed (in the war diary) objectives. The attack began at 5.20am began their attack and captured the first two objectives with relative ease. The battalion then paused and consolidated under a heavy enemy barrage which allowed the Grenadier & Coldstream Guards to pass through their lines who then captured the third objective. At 7.15pm the enemy again tried and failed to conduct a counter attack and the positions were held. Alfred was killed during this action.
