Original Burial

CWGC records (click) show that Thomas's remains were found in a grave at map reference 57C.S.17.d.5.6 and re-interred at Delville Wood Cemetery on, we think, 12 Nov 1920 (click). 57C.S.17.d.5.6 was a point in a field just to the south of Longueval and just outside the very southern end of Delville Wood, click here to create a map of the area.

Circumstances of Death

Frank is listed as being killed in action on 31 Aug 1916. The war diary for the 60th Trench Mortar Battery reveals that there were four units within 60 Battery, W; X; Y & Z. The entries for the 31st August covering all four units are transcribed below, however none of them give any real clues as to how Thomas was killed nor do they list casualties. In addition to the war diary entries there is a transcription of an Obituary from The Buxton Advertiser dated 9th September 1916.
