Circumstances of Death

George was killed in action by an enemy sniper on 16th December 1915. The 10th Battalion war diary entry for the 16th is transcribed below and reveals that the trench parapet was too low which probably explains why George was killed.

Trenches at Richbourg St. Vaast – 16 Dec 1915: From Farm Corner to Copse Street. Fine.

CO and 2nd in Command visited D Coy trenches in the morning, using Copse Street & Bond Street. These were thigh deep in water. The parapet was too low in places. Some of the dugouts were usable.

The 7th S Lancs Regt relieved the 7th Kings Own on our left during the evening. C Coy bathed at No 4 Rest House.

Casualties: No 4289 Pte Allwood G – Killed in action – D Coy
No 5801 Sgt Armstrong J – Killed in action – D Coy
