Circumstances of Death

Harry was wounded on 6th October 1915 near Hooge and taken to the 10th Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek where he died of wounds to the buttock & abdomen the next day. The 2nd Battalion war diary for the 6th of October 1915 is transcribed below and reveals that Harry was the only man wounded that day.

East of Zillebeek - 06 Oct 1915: Close and very muggy day. No change in general disposition of the Battalion except that the position in reserve was reduced to 2 Platoons. Local situation fairly quiet, usual occasional shelling.

Casualties: One man [Harry] wounded.

2nd Lt Jack Gilman O’Brien, S Lanc Regt, joined at Transport bivouac and proceeded during the evening, together with four other officers, to join the Battalion, moving with supplies. Transport moving up this evening was exposed for some time to hostile shell fire but thankfully there were no casualties.

Very dark night.

1 Coy 9th Suffolk Regt and ½ Coy 9th Norfolk Regt attached to the Battalion for instruction in trench work etc.
