Circumstances of Death

Henry is listed as being killed in action / death presumed on 19 Apr 1918. The 10th Battalion war diary indicates that Henry likely died on the 18th not 19th of April and the war diary entries for the period 18th to 20th are transcribed below.

Kemmel - 18 Apr 1918: 3.30am: Patrol of 1 Platoon with L.G. [Lewis Gun] under 2/Lt Duruty went out with the object of securing identifications from enemy dead or wounded. Patrol was compelled to come in by our barrage put down in response to a S.O.S. signal sent up on right of the Battn.

12 noon: French took over responsibility for Kemmel defences.

6.30pm: Relief orders issued to Coys, Battn was relieved by 22nd French Regt. 2 Prisoners taken by French in front of our centre Coy were brought in.

10.30pm: Orders to commence withdrawal received from Bde.

11.55pm: 1st Coy passed Bn HQ. Coys marched via Brulooze – Canada Corner – Westoutre to a field near Wippenhoek Siding, about 2 miles E of Abeele.

Casualties 10th to 18th inclusive: Officers – killed 1, wounded 7, wounded and taken prisoner 1, wounded and missed 1 (total 10)
                                                Other Ranks – Killed 19, died of wounds 2, wounded 225 missing 207 (total 453)

Camp near Wippenhoek Siding – 19/4/1918: The Battn marched by Coys via Brulooze – Canada Corner – Westoutre to a field near Wippenhoek Siding, about 2 miles E of Abeele arriving about 3am [see also above]. Coys were in the open, no tents having arrived. Tents were drawn & pitched during the day. A & B Cioys were accommodated in ? in vicinity of the camp. The day was devoted to cleaning up.

Camp near Wippenhoek Siding – 20/4/1918: Day spent in cleaning up, re-organising etc. Draft sent from Reinforcement Camp was accommodated for the night at Abeele Areodrome. END
