Previous Wounding
Walter was previously wounded while serving with the 2nd Royal Irish Rifles on 9th Aug 1917, he was admitted to the 10th Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek and on 10 Aug 1917 he was transferred to 18th General Hospital at Camiers (now a USA Army Base). On 20 Aug 1917 he was transferred to a Hospital ship and presumably returned to the UK where he was able to recover and return to the front lines.

Walter is listed as dying of wounds at the 56th Field Ambulance on 7 Aug 1918. The 58th Battalion war diary shows that he was wounded on 6 Aug 1918 during an enemy air raid and the diary entries for the 6th and 7th are transcribed below. Glisy - 6th Aug 1918: A Coy detrained at Longeau and proceeded to a spot in vicinity of Bois de Genetelles for defense of Amiens. B Coy carried out harassing fire on enemy targets, 1500 rounds expended. 6am: 3 sections of C Coy relieved ? M.G. Coy. During relief enemy plane dropped two bombs on No 3 Section. Casualties 2 wounded. 11am: D Coy entrained at Villers Cotterets, detrained at Longeau [at] 7pm. Marched to Glisy. Glisy - 7th Aug 1918: Enemy aircraft active, bombs dropped in vicinity of Bois Genetelles. No 4 Section B Coy rejoined unit from 175 Infantry Brigade. END |
