Circumstances of Death

Donald is listed as being killed in action on 16th September 1916 and is remembered on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial. However there is some confusion as where Donald acutally was on the day he died. Both the CWGC and his British War & Victory Medal roll state that at the time of his death he was a Private in the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers (RF's) but attached to the 9th Battlion Yorkshire Light Infantry (YLI). The confusion comes because on the 16th September 1916 the 9th YLI were actually on the Somme and the 2nd RF's were at Ypres. The respective war diaries are reproduced below (Courtesy of the National Archives) but the confusion arises because if, as the records indicate, Donald was with the 9th YLI then he should be remembered on the Thiepval (Somme) Memorial not the Ypres Memorial. We are going to raise this issue with the War Graves Commission and will report back if we hear anything. 9th YLI Diary - Flers & Gueudecourt on the Somme

Donald's only link to Leamington Spa appears to be that his parents were living at 32 Holly Walk, Leamington Spa around the time of his death.
However by 1921 they were living in Fakenham, Suffold. Donald's father was a Wine Merchants Manager for John Nethersole & Sons.
