Circumstances of Death

William is listed as having died of wounds on 4 Oct 1917 and was subsequently buried at Duisans which at the time was used for burials by the 8th Casualty Clearing Station. The Warwickshire Roll of Honour states that William was wounded in the jaw, abdomen and stomach by shrapnel from an aerial torpedo. We don't know when William was wounded and the 2nd/7th Battalion war diary entries for the period 30th September to 4th October 1917 are transcribed below.

Near Fampoux – 30 Sep 1917: 1am - Enemy put down heavy barrage of T.M’s, 5.9” & 4.2” all along the front & on right Bn of left Brigade, lasting about 25 minutes. SOS up and all artillery on.

Lewis guns of left Coy fired down No Mans Land as it was thought enemy had raided left Brigade. This proved false. All quiet by 1.50am.

Casualties 2/Lt’s Barnard & Powell and 4 men wounded. Six men killed.

A misty morning. Colonel St. John joined for duty & took over command of the Battalion.

Chemical Works sector – 1 Oct 1917: Battalions third day in the left front sub-sector. Very little activity. Meeting of O.C’s Coys at HQ. Two special patrols out from Left & Right Coys. Magnificent weather, full moon at night.

Chemical Works sector – 2 Oct 1917: Quiet night, misty morning. G.O.C Division & A.D.M.S visited the line.

Chemical Works sector – 3 Oct 1917: Enemy showed a little more artillery activity. A little rain during the night. Observation was bad.

Chemical Works sector – 4 Oct 1917: Fairly quiet day. H.T.M [Heavy Trench Mortar] fired five rounds over our right Coy front in the afternoon.
