Circumstances of Death

Charles is listed as being killed in action on 25th September 1914. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 23rd to 26th September are transcribed below but make no mention of casualties. However Charles' Register of Effects states he was killed on 25 Aug 1914 but all other records state 25th September.

Augy – 23 Sep 1914: A Company rejoined from the N side of river about 2am. Battalion remained at rest in billets at Augy.

Chassemy - 24 Sep 1914: Battalion moved about 2pm and relieved 3rd Worcestershire Regt in the vicinity of Chassemy. A, B & D Coys occupied positions in woods to the NW of Chassemy watching the bridge at Conde.

C Coy & Bn HQ remained in reserve at Chassemy. Transport parked in small wood about 1 mile S of Chassemy.

Major Green assumed command of 2nd Echelon of 7th Infantry Brigade. Transport Captain Bagley assuming command of A Company.

Chassemy - 25 Sep 1914: No change in situation

Chassemy - 26 Sep 1914: Battalion relieved by R. Irish Rifles and withdrew at billets at Augy. The machine guns were handed over temporarily to R.I.R.
