Charles is listed as having died of double pneumonia on 3rd October 1918. He was buried at the Doiran Military Cemetery which was used for burials at that time by the 25th and 40th Casualty Clearing Stations. The following obituaries were published in the Leamington Courier on 18th October 1918 and Ealing Gazette on 19th October 1918. Leamington Courier - 18th October 1918 News has been received at 4 Norfolk Street, Leamington that Private Charles H. Cleaver R.A.M.C., eldest son of Mr E. Cleaver has died of double pneumonia in Macedonia. Cleaver had a distinguished scholastic career winning several scholarships and finally taking his B.A. degree at the London University. Joining up in 1914, he was sent overseas early the following year. He was formerly for a time teaching at Schrubland Street Council Schools [confirmed by an article in 1900]. He was expected home at any time, as he was about to take up a commission. Ealing Gazette - 19th October 1918 The Gazette regrets to learn of the death of Private Charles Henry Cleaver R.A.M.C., from double pneumonia on October 3rd at Salonica at the age of 34 years. Educated at Warwick County School and Borough Road College, 1904-1906, he afterwards took his B.A. degree at the London University. Some years ago he occupied the presidential chair of the Ealing Teachers Assocition. He was appointed assistant master at Northfield School in 1906 and joined the Army on October 10th 1914. Many of the old boys and elder scholars at the school will remember him with the highest esteem for not only was he a most capable teacher but took a keen interest in the lads games, especially in the football team. He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps and, after training, served in Serbia and Salonica [and France]. He was married last February and expected home to undergo a course of training prior to taking up a commission when the regretable news came that he had passed away. |
