Circumstances of Death

Cyril is listed as being killed in action on 26th July 1916, after initially being reported as missing in action from a working part that had been hit by shell fire. The 16th Battalion war diary entries for the 25th and 26th August are transcribed below. Ref Map – Longueval 57C - i.e. 57C.S.16.b.8.0 - plot references here.

Montuaban Alley – 25 Jul 1916: From 12 noon to 6pm the enemy persistently shelled the area S.26.c & d & A.2. a & b with howitzers & heavy shells, No damage was done to our trenches.

Casualties:
Wounded: Lt. H.J. Hammond shell shock. Lt Hammond was hit by loose earth caused by explosion. He was bruised & badly shacken.

Draft: 2/Lt G.T. Corrie & 74 OR arrive at Battalion.

Montuaban Alley – 26 Jul 1916: 3.30am C Coy proceeded on working party to dig trenches from S.16.b.8.0 to S.17.c.8.3 & to construct ? in part of trench already commenced by 1/Cheshire Regt.

Casualties: Wounded 11 OR shell fire (1 OR remaining at duty)
