Military Service History

Circumstances of Death

Percival is listed as dying of wounds, gunshot wounds on both arms, right knee and face, received in action on 25th August 1917 at 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek. The war diary reveals that Percival was wounded the previous day, 24th, during an operation to relieve the 8th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. Percival had joined the Battalion just 12 days previously. The 9th Battalion war diary entries for the 12th August, and the period 23rd to 25th August are transcribed below.

Borre - 12 Aug 1917: Battalion at rest and in training. 2nd Lt P. Thistlewood joined.

Ouderzeele in Reserve - 23 Aug 1917: Orders received to relieve 9th K.R.R.C but later cancelled and fresh orders to relieve 8th K.R.R.C on 43rd Infantry Brigade front received. Relief unavoidably delayed until after midnight due to heavy shelling.

2nd Lt P.S. Williams transferred to R.F.C. 2nd Lt E. W. Huggins transferred to H.B. MGC. 2 Lt S Gardener gassed. Casualties O.R. 28

Ouderzeele in Action - 24 Aug 1917: Detailed report of operations of this day attached. Capt. H.C. Round DSO, MC killed. 2nd Lt J.E. Savill wounded and missing. 2nd Lt P. Thistlewood killed.

Ypres - 25 Aug 1917: Battalion relieved by units of 23rd Division and returned to the Ecole on Ypres-Menin Road. Marched from Ecole to Cafe Belge, embussed and proceeded to camp at Wippenhoek.
