  • 08 Sep 1917 - Posted to RNAS at Dover Guston Road Aerodrome as part of 10th Squadron and at some stage moved to Pol near Dunkerque

Circumstances of Death

Wilfred is listed as being killed in action on 3rd February 1918 while flying near Oostnieu Kerke in Flanders and was originally reported as missing near Dunkirk. No 10 Squadron was based at Pol near Dunkerque and was merged into the RAF on 1 April 1918. At the time of Wilfred's death the Squadron was equipped with Sopwith Camel aircraft. The following obituary was published by the Stratford Herald.

PRESUMED KILLED IN ACTION - FLIGHT SUB-LIEUTENANT WILFRED H. WILMOT

Flight Sub-Lieutenant Wilfred H. Wilmot RNAS who as reported missing on February 3rd is now officially presumed to have been killed in action on that date at the age of 20. He was the youngest son of Mr. W. H. Wilmot of Belmont, Maidenhead Road, Stratford upon Avon and was educated at Wellington College, Salop, where he excelled as an athlete.

He distinguished himself as an athlete and held the sports championship cup. At 18 years of age he received a commission in the Royal Naval Air Service. The commander of his squadron in a letter to his father says “your son was a splendid pilot and a capable officer. I will find it very difficult to fill his place with anyone his equal.”
