Circumstances Leading to Death - War Diary Extracts
On the 12th November 1916 the battalion moved into the assaulting trenches near Serre in preparation for an attack on enemy lines the following day.
13th November 1916 – "The Battn successfully crossed the German front line and assaulted the second line which was practically ?. The battalions from the left division came across our front breaking up formations. Reorganisation was rendered difficult by the heavy mist. Casualties among officers and other ranks were very heavy". William is listed as being killed during the fighting on the 13th November.
