Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The below took place on the first and second days of the Third Battle of Ypres, better known as Battle of Passchendaele.
The war diary is faded and hard to read but on the 31st Jul and 1st Aug 1917the 164th Company MGC were in the front lines east of St. Julien when they were ordered to take part in the attacks on two German Lines at the Black Line and then Green Line (see map). Although the Black Line was taken the attack on the Green Line was repelled with heavy casualties and they were forced to retire to the Black Line. At the end of the day on the 1st Aug the company retired to Wieltje.
