Previous Service History

George's service number, 8480, indicates that he enlisted at sometime betwween 18th May 1904 and 31st January 1905 when numbers 8061 and 8636 were issued. However this is complicated by the fact that his Soldiers Who Died in the Great War record states that he had previously served as Pte 8124 East Lancs Regiment. If that is the case then he enlisted with them at sometime between 16th July 1904 and January 1905 when numbers 8161 and 8460 were issued. It is possible that he started with the East Lancs Regiment and moved to the R.W.F. in early 1905, alternatively the previous service with East Lancs could be erroneous as it is not repeated in his Medal Records. |
Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 7th November 1914, having initially being reported as missing. The 1st Battalion war diary entry for the 7th November is transcribed below. Near Zillebeke - 7.11.14: A charge was made on the enemy's trenches which were taken and 3 M.Guns captured. The German trenches were evacuated immediately owing to their M Guns opening fire and enfilading them. Casualties were: |
