Private Frank Green, whose death was recorded last week, was the son of Mrs. S. Checkley, Old Milverton. He was serving in the 1st King's Shropshire Light Infantry when the war broke out, having enlisted in Shrewsbury about three years ago.
Private Green's platoon Sergeant, in a letter, says "On February 28th a few volunteers for patrol duty were asked for by the Captain. Private Green who was always one of the first to volunteer for such duty, offered his services again. When about 50 yards from the trench he was seen to fall, having been instantly killed by a bullet in the head.
Green, although only 19 years of age, is described as a splendid fellow, absolutely fearless and always cheerful. The Commander of the late soldiers platoon has also written a letter of sympathy and says "He always proved himself a very brave fellow and never hesitated to volunteer for any work.
It may be mentioned that Mrs. Checkley has another son serving as a Sergeant in the Rifle Brigade.
