Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

On 3 Sep 1916 the battalion attacked Falfemont Farm during the Battle of the Somme but with their right flank completly exposed to machine gun fire the attack ultimately failed with 293 casualties. John was was wounded during the attack and died of those wounds on 5 Sep 1916 at one of the 13 Army Hospitals in the St. Sever (Rouen) area.
