Whitmore was one of 1367 solider plus an unknown number of crew who were aboard HMT Royal Edward who en route to Moudros as reinforcements at Gallipoli. AS they passed the island of Kandeloussa the Royal Edward was spotted by German submarine UB-14 which fored a torpedo that struck her stern and Royal Edward sank stern first at a cost of at least 935 lives
